Located
in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh,
Dharamsala served as a British hill station in the
19th century. Dharamsala came into extience in the
world map when in 1959, His Holiness The 14th Dalai
Lama of Tibet choose this place to be his official
residince and headquaters of the exiled Tibet government.
Since
that time, a steady flow of Tibetans have crossed
the Himalayas and made their way here in search of
freedom and being close to their much revered leader.
The presence of His Holiness and the appeal of Tibetans
and their colorful culture have drawn tourists to
this town from all over the world.
Dharamsala
has two sections. Lower Dharamsala includes the Kotiwali
Bazaar and is primarily an Indian community. Upper
Dharamsala includes McLeod Ganj, where most of the
Tibetan community lives, and the Tibetan Government
in Exile is based.
